CURRENT POSiTIONS

ASSOCIATES
Typically, new associates are assigned to one of our practice departments, but firm policy encourages associates to devote a portion of their time to areas outside their department so as to allow them to develop well rounded skills as attorneys and to pursue new directions in the law as their interests change and are refined over time. New associates are assigned a shareholder advisor to facilitate their transition from law school to private practice.
Associates at Karr Tuttle Campbell are provided opportunities to work with experienced shareholders as well as to handle matters on their own. The firm believes that case responsibility and client contact are important aspects of the associate experience. Our open-door policy provides opportunities for informal but valuable training and development.
Karr Tuttle Campbell hires its associates with the prospect that they will be invited to become shareholders. Consistent with that practice, the firm does not hire a large number of associates with the expectation of forced attrition. As part of the effort to help our associates develop as lawyers and to foster their progress toward shareholder status, we devote considerable time and effort to the associate evaluation process. Formal associate evaluations are conducted on an annual basis, with input solicited from all shareholders in the firm. An Associate Evaluation Committee interviews each associate, identifies areas in which the associate can improve his or her effectiveness, and encourages feedback and commentary from the associate. After an associate's third and fifth years with the firm, the evaluation process includes a discussion by the shareholders of the associate's progress toward shareholder status. The results of the evaluation are shared with the associate. Associates may be considered for shareholder status after they have been with the firm for approximately seven and one-half years.
Karr Tuttle Campbell compensates associates at a level which is competitive with firms of comparable size in the Pacific Northwest. The firm recognizes superior associate performance with bonuses.
SUMMER ASSOCIATE PROGRAM
The goal of our program is to expose summer associates to the various areas of our practice and provides both the firm and the summer associate the opportunity for mutual evaluation. To ensure that each summer associate has a wide range of legal experiences during the summer, a Summer Associate Committee carefully monitors the work of summer associates. A supervising attorney also is assigned to each summer associate to provide guidance and direction. Summer associates who have completed two years of law school are encouraged to obtain certification under Rule 9 of the Washington Admission to Practice Rules, which authorizes them to participate in discovery proceedings. In the past, summer associates have met with clients, participated in discovery proceedings, and argued matters in District and Superior Courts. Opportunities exist for a wide variety of challenging legal experiences. Although we view the Summer Associate Program as a working experience, it is our goal to make the summer with the firm both intellectually stimulating and personally rewarding.
WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT
Karr Tuttle Campbell values quality of work and quality of life for our attorneys and staff alike. Our founding partners were ground-breakers in the early 1900’s hiring female attorneys. We continue to be progressive and flexible in meeting the needs of our attorneys and staff whenever possible. Karr Tuttle Campbell has attorneys and staff members who telecommute or work flexible schedules. The firm prides itself in being on the cutting edge in taking full advantage of what technology has to offer.
The firm also emphasizes teamwork and offers activities to help foster a team spirit such as firm wide social events. Past events include a mountain hike, attending a musical production, family movie night, bowling competitions and tours of the local wineries. We have found that spending time together with our families outside of the workplace helps build stronger working relationships.
COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY
Karr Tuttle Campbell is active in our community both through pro bono work and community service. A vast majority of our attorneys serve as trustees and board members in the arts and other charitable organizations including Northwest Ballet, Northwest Chamber Orchestra, and Childhaven. In addition, Karr Tuttle Campbell participates bi-monthly at the Seattle Emergency Housing Shelter to provide legal advice to its residents. Each attorney through an activity of their choice is encouraged to participate and give valuable service back to our surrounding community.
