In 1904 Day Karr and George Gregory formed a law partnership, which continues today as a professional service corporation under the name Karr Tuttle Campbell. Karr provided general legal services which sometimes required a trek up the wooden stairs of the aptly named Profanity Hill to the King County Courthouse. Much has changed since those days. The firm and the courthouse are both in different locations, and both have grown substantially. However, over 100 years later, the firm’s core mission remains the same: to provide a full range of legal services of the highest quality and integrity, at a fair price.
A NORTHWEST FIRM WITH A NATIONAL CLIENTELE
With its origins firmly in the Northwest, Karr Tuttle Campbell knows the local terrain and serves as legal counsel to many large, well-established Northwest institutions, some dating their association with the firm to the early years of the previous century. The firm’s long term and consistent commitment has resulted in its selection as the pro bono firm of the year by the King County Bar Association in 1992, Seattle Emergency Housing Services, which provides temporary housing to the homeless in 2000, and by the Puget Sound chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators in 2002. Similar accolades have been bestowed upon individual attorneys.
Well before it was common practice, Karr Tuttle Campbell was devoted to diversity. Muriel Mawer, who graduated second in her class in 1936 from the University of Washington Law School, has been associated with the firm for decades and was one of the first female senior partners at a major Seattle firm. Karr Tuttle Campbell’s dedication to bringing diversity to the legal workplace continues with its involvement in such endeavors as the minority clerkship program, which is intended to provide summer opportunities to deserving minority law students.
